Making time for self-care is difficult

Sometimes we say “yes” to everyone else and we are left with very little time for ourselves. It can be hard to say no, and we may not be sure how others will react. But we have to weigh this against knowing how we will feel if we are overwhelmed and not taking care of ourselves.

At this time in our lives, sometimes we are the person who most needs a break. If there was ever a time to try out being more assertive and asking for help, this is the time! Our loved ones may appreciate the clear directions and the chance to offer meaningful support to us.

For tips on assertiveness, see Effective Communication.

I find it hard to give myself permission to take care of myself

Although attending to the needs of others is meaningful and important work, neglecting our own needs eventually catches up. We can start to feel tired, stressed, unappreciated, and even resentful. Remember what flight attendants always say: “You need to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help anyone else.” Being pregnant takes a lot of energy, and we need to remember to nourish ourselves.
